Yellow Corn vs White Corn: Which Should You Buy?

Yellow corn (maize) kernels for feed and food export

Corn (maize) is the most produced grain in the world. Buyers usually choose between two types: yellow corn and white corn. They grow the same way, but they go to different markets and are priced differently.

The Main Difference

Yellow corn gets its colour from carotenoid pigments, mainly beta-carotene. White corn has little of these pigments. That one difference shapes how each type is used.

Yellow Corn: The Feed Grain

Most of the world’s yellow corn goes into animal feed. It is the main energy ingredient in poultry, pig, cattle and fish feed. The pigments also help give egg yolks and chicken skin a deeper colour, which many consumers prefer. Yellow corn is used too for starch, corn oil, ethanol and some foods.

Typical buyers: feed mills, poultry integrators, livestock farms and grain importers.

White Corn: The Food Grain

White corn is mainly milled for human food: maize meal, porridge, tortillas, arepas and snacks. In much of Africa and Latin America it is a daily staple, and many consumers prefer its colour and taste.

Typical buyers: flour and maize meal mills, food processors and government food programmes.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Yellow corn White corn
Main use Animal feed, starch, oil Maize meal, flour, snacks
Beta-carotene Higher Very low
Typical moisture 14% max 13.5 to 14% max
Aflatoxin limit Often 20 ppb for feed Stricter for food, often 10 ppb or lower
Price Usually lower Often a premium in food markets

Limits vary by country. Always check your import regulations.

Specifications to Agree Before Buying

  • Moisture: high moisture leads to mould during shipping.
  • Broken kernels and foreign matter: affect milling yield and feed quality.
  • Aflatoxin: the most important safety test, especially for food-grade white corn.
  • GMO status: some markets require non-GMO corn.
  • Grade: many contracts reference US No. 2 or an equivalent standard.

Packaging and Shipping

Corn ships in 50 kg PP bags, in bulk inside containers (with liner bags), or in bulk vessels for large volumes. A 20 ft container usually holds around 24 to 26 MT, depending on packing and weight limits.
