RBD Palm Olein CP8 vs CP10: Which Grade Should You Buy?
RBD palm olein is one of the most widely used cooking oils in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. When you ask a supplier for a quote, the first question you will hear is: CP8 or CP10? This guide explains what those grades mean and how to choose.
What Is RBD Palm Olein?
Crude palm oil is pressed from the fruit of the oil palm. It is then refined, bleached and deodorized (RBD) to remove free fatty acids, colour and odour. The refined oil is cooled and split into two parts: a solid fraction called palm stearin and a liquid fraction called palm olein. Olein is the part sold as cooking oil.
What Does “CP” Mean?
CP stands for cloud point, the temperature in degrees Celsius at which the oil starts to turn cloudy as it cools. A lower cloud point means the oil stays clear at lower temperatures.
- CP10: stays clear down to about 10°C. This is the standard grade for tropical markets.
- CP8: stays clear down to about 8°C. It is fractionated further, so it costs a little more.
- CP6: a premium grade for cooler climates and clear retail bottles.
CP8 vs CP10 at a Glance
| CP10 | CP8 | |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud point | About 10°C max | About 8°C max |
| Typical iodine value | 56 min | 58 min |
| Best for | Hot climates, frying, food factories | Mild winters, clear retail bottles |
| Price | Lower | Slightly higher |
Figures are typical trade values. Always confirm the exact specification in your contract.
Which Grade Should You Choose?
Choose CP10 if your market is warm all year, for example West Africa, South Asia or Southeast Asia, or if the oil is going to restaurants and food factories where clarity on the shelf does not matter.
Choose CP8 or CP6 if your customers buy oil in clear bottles and your winters get cool. Oil that turns cloudy on the shelf looks spoiled to shoppers, even though it is not.
Key Specifications to Check
- Free fatty acid (FFA): 0.1% max
- Moisture and impurities: 0.1% max
- Colour (5¼” Lovibond cell): 3 red max
- Cloud point and iodine value: as above
Packaging Options
Palm olein ships in flexitanks (about 20 MT per 20 ft container), 190 kg drums, 20 L jerry cans, or 1 L to 5 L PET bottles. Bottled oil can carry your own brand.
